Humanise my ChatGPT essay
Students have known for a long time that their coursework will need to get through a plagiarism detector but now it has to survive the AI detector too. Using AI is not banned by universities but its use is subject to a set of rules and guidelines. If you break these rules the consequences will be the same as for plagiarism and can be quite serious. In this post, we consider how to stay within the rules and how to humanise your ChatGPT essay.
Before we continue, we should make clear that we are not just talking about ChatGPT which is maybe the best known tool but also any text-generating AI. So first we will highlight the deficiencies in AI text and explain why a detector knows it was not written by a human. Then we’ll suggest some ideas for overcoming the problem.
How detectors identify AI text
The technology used to generate AI content and to detect it are pretty much the same. It’s no surprise that companies offering tools to generate AI also offer detection tools. So the detection tools scan a piece of text and compare it to what it as an AI text generator would have written itself.
Now this is where it gets a bit technical. There are two main characteristics that differentiate AI and human text. The first is known as perplexity and is the measure of how unpredictable a text is. AI-generated text avoids language that may confuse a reader. Instead, it selects language that reads very smoothly because it’s easy for the reader to predict the next word or phrase. This is why you won’t find grammar or syntax errors in AI-generated texts. The second is termed burstiness and is a measure of the variation in sentence length and structure. AI text has a low burstiness and AI sentences normally fit within a range of 10 to 20 words. High burstiness is seen as human and low burstiness as AI. Where there is a combination of low perplexity and low burstiness the detector is more likely to label the text as being AI.
Humanising AI-generated text
The art of humanising AI text is a difficult one to learn. As well as normal paraphrasing you would need to add some perplexity and some burstiness. This is certainly possible for those students with advanced written English skills but sadly if English is not your native language and for international students it is very tough indeed.
