How to humanise AI text

Many blog readers are interested in knowing how to humanise AI text. So we’ve teamed up with our partners at Written English to give you this short guide.

There are three main characteristics that are used to determine whether a text has been AI-generated or written by a human.
These are
1.perplexity,
2.burstiness
and 3.human error

Perplexity

AI-generated text has a lower perplexity than human text. When talking about AI language models, this perplexity is a measure of uncertainty. Perplexity is like a game of guessing the next word in a sentence; the better the model is at guessing, the lower the perplexity score. Think of it as a measure of a model’s “surprise” when it encounters new data — less surprise means a better prediction. AI text is highly predictable meaning the perplexity score is low in contrast to human text which is less predictable. An AI detector can measure perplexity when deciding whether the text is human or not. Human text is more likely to use complex sentences whereas AI text uses more coherent and fluent language.

Burstiness

The second characteristic that differentiates AI text from human text is called burstiness and is a measure of the variation in sentence length and structure. AI text has a low burstiness and AI sentences normally fit within a range of 10 to 20 words. High burstiness is seen as human and low burstiness as AI. Where there is a combination of low perplexity and low burstiness the detector is more likely to label the text as being AI.

Human error

It should be no surprise that the term human error is a sign that a text has been written by a human and is not AI. AI text generators like ChatGPT don’t really make language errors (although they can make factual errors). Of course, you don’t want your text to be full of mistakes but one or two minor ones may help greatly with the AI detectors.
